All and all its a beautiful story...Click hear to read a detailed article on this miraculous story! Dog owner and avid fisherman, Nick Hayworth was out on the boat with Luna his one year old German Shepherd on February 10. They were just off the coast of San Diego, California, when Nick looked around and realized Luna was no where to be seen.
"It was really devastating to go from having this dog next to me every
minute of my life to all of sudden, she's gone in a flash," Hayworth
told ABC News during his interview.
Nick Hayworth searched the Pacific Ocean for days, with even the
U.S. Navy joining the search on land, air and sea, but he
gave up hope. He posted this status update to Facebook, "RIP Luna, you will be missed."Nick went on to say: "I was heartbroken. I presumed she was dead," he said.
But Luna is a survivor and didn't give up! She swam nearly 2 miles to the Navy's San Clemente
Island, where she survived by rodents and dead fish. Thank God for fresh water left by storms. Eventually she was found by military personnel, chilling on a
roadside.
"They saw Luna just sitting on the side of the road wagging her tail," DeMunnik said, according to ABC. "Keep in mind, there are no domesticated animals on the island, so it was a stunning sight."
The German shepherd has since been examined by a wildlife biologist at the San Diego Zoo,
who determined Luna was "perfectly healthy other than being a little
undernourished," according to Sandy DeMunnik, public affairs officer for
the Naval Base Coronado.
As for Hayworth, "Probably the happiest I've ever been in my life to have my best friend back."
